Bioactive substances in Hericium erinaceus and their biological properties: a review - ScienceDirect

Lion’s Mane is particularly rich in polysaccharides (notably β-glucans), phenolic compounds, and specific diterpenes called hericenones (mainly in the fruiting body) and erinacines (in the mycelium).

These compounds cross the blood–brain barrier and stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis.

Polysaccharides (high molecular weight) contribute to immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects.

Sterols (ergosterol) and phenols provide anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity.

Additional trials suggest mood-enhancing effects:

Postmenopausal women consuming Lion’s Mane biscuits (0.5 g fruiting body powder × 4 daily) showed reduced depression and anxiety after 4 weeks.
